The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has released a comprehensive set of flood safety guidelines to help residents stay safe as heavy rainfall continues to affect parts of the country.
The advisory urges the public to remain indoors during heavy downpours, move valuables to higher ground, switch off electricity when it is safe to do so, and use only approved evacuation routes if necessary. Residents are also encouraged to avoid drains and relocate to higher ground immediately if floodwaters begin to rise.
The Assembly warned against dangerous practices such as throwing rubbish into drains, walking or driving through flooded areas, touching exposed electrical wires, attempting to cross fast-moving water, and taking unnecessary risks to protect property. In emergencies, the public is advised to contact the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) by dialing 112 or using the emergency numbers provided by the Assembly.
The safety campaign comes as Ghana experiences intensified rainfall, with several communities recording flooding following recent downpours. Authorities have repeatedly urged residents to keep drainage systems free of waste, monitor official weather updates, and cooperate with emergency response agencies to reduce the impact of flooding.
Residents are reminded that preparedness, vigilance, and adherence to safety directives remain essential in protecting lives and property during the rainy season.
