Some skip breakfast to attend lectures, while others go through the entire day with little or no food because of financial difficulties. During examination periods, the situation becomes even worse.
A hungry student cannot give off his or her best. Hunger affects concentration, health, confidence, and academic performance. That is why Solomon Konlan and Emmanuel Yeboah have introduced the SRC Food Bank Policy a practical student welfare initiative aimed at ensuring that no student goes hungry, especially before and during examination periods. The Food Bank is not about giving handouts. It is about standing with colleagues who are going through difficult moments. It is about creating a campus where every student knows that they are not alone.
Under this policy, the SRC will stock essential food items such as rice, yam, maize, cooking oil, and other basic food supplies. These items will be made available to students who genuinely need support during difficult times.
To protect the dignity of beneficiaries, assistance will be provided through a confidential referral and verification system. Students can be referred by SRC executives, student leaders, or university staff, ensuring that those who truly need help receive it without embarrassment or public exposure.
The policy also outlines how the Food Bank will be sustained. Funding will come from a combination of a portion of SRC dues, donations, partnerships with businesses and organizations, and voluntary contributions from students, staff, and well wishers. This means the initiative is designed to be sustainable and community driven rather than a one time project.
The vision is simple: when students have access to food, they can focus on learning instead of worrying about their next meal. This will improve academic performance, reduce stress, promote student welfare, and strengthen the spirit of togetherness on campus. This is more than a campaign promise. It is a commitment to compassion, dignity, and student-centered leadership.
